Sustainability
Several innovative measures are being incorporated into the East Street Regeneration. These include Green Walls and Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
Green walls
Green walls – a sustainable method to help create buildings with low or even zero carbon footprints – will feature in the development on the external walls of the cinema and car park.
A green wall is a vertical garden that is pre-planted on a wall cladding system then attached to the external façade of a building. It acts as a bio-filter, enhancing air quality by transforming harmful airborne contaminants into clean oxygen and reducing the release of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It also retains rainwater that would otherwise run off the building and flow into the drainage system.
Decentralised, District Combined Heat and Power (CHP)
Decentralised ‘Combined Heat and Power’ (CHP) plants generate both electricity and heat in one single process and can provide an effective green energy solution for mixed-use developments. The East Street development proposes to feature CHP in a centralised plant to provide energy for all the homes.
- CHP uses natural gas as the main fuel.
- The heat produced through this process will provide hot water and space heating.
- CHP can provide significant savings to tenants/residents on their heating, hot water, cooling, and electricity costs.
- Lower Emissions – less fuel burnt means reduced emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2).
The East Street CHP plant is currently being considered to extend to the Farnham Sports Centre producing an annual benefit of a reduction in carbon emissions of 77.4 tonnes – equivalent to:
- 79.1 extra hectares of forest absorbing carbon, or
- 478 extra barrels of oil not consumed, or
- 46.8 extra cars and light trucks not used.
